Neuropathy Research Brief · October 23, 2026

In a study of 794 people with diabetic neuropathy, worse nerve-conduction findings were associated with poorer measures of autonomic function related to heart rate. A separate observational study found that a measure of leg nerve function was associated with faster kidney decline in some patients. Neither finding proves cause and effect or replaces a heart or kidney evaluation.

What this means for patients

Researchers also found changes in immune cells and their signaling in people with diabetic neuropathy. This is early laboratory and observational work, not evidence that a device restores blood flow. In cancer care, a separate expert consensus recommends reporting functional changes during brentuximab treatment promptly to the oncology team. The drug manufacturer sponsored that consensus.
