A review of nine trials found that radial shockwave may ease chronic low-back pain in the short term. Studies varied substantially, and average disability improvement fell below the review’s threshold for a noticeable benefit. It did not demonstrate disc repair.

What this means for patients

A separate review described how poor sleep and sensitivity to pain can be related, without proving that any particular office treatment corrects sleep or inflammation. In a surgical cohort, patients could have substantial improvement after decompression for spinal stenosis and still have some back pain a year later. Those surgical results do not transfer to a nonsurgical decompression machine.
