Knee arthritis involves more than mechanical load. A study using human samples, cells, and animal models identified inflammatory signals that may link body fat and cartilage changes. Most of the evidence explaining cause and effect came from laboratory work. It does not show that a particular exercise or device regrows cartilage.
What this means for patients
In interviews after a mindfulness program, some people with chronic musculoskeletal pain described more control over daily life even when pain remained. Only ten people were interviewed and there was no comparison group. Their experiences give us a reason to ask about valued activities alongside pain intensity.
