Neuropathy Research Brief · October 2, 2026

A review of studies in breast cancer found that supervised cooling during paclitaxel treatment was associated with a lower risk of at least moderate neuropathy. Treatment protocols varied and the review did not establish that cooling prevents weakness, avoids chemotherapy interruptions, or treats existing numbness.

What this means for patients

Subsequent update: a larger randomized CryoPac trial did not find fewer cases of neuropathy at the end of treatment on its primary measure, although some sensory outcomes favored cooling. Together these results support a conversation with oncology before treatment, not home icing of feet that have already lost protective sensation.
